I have a few odd questions…and since Lizards seem to have some experience with all fields of knowledge, I figured asking here would be a good first step.

Recently, someone left the store, he had something in his hand, about the size of a remote…and as he entered the lobby I heard a very loud, sharp popping sound. I’ve heard that type of sound before, from very high voltage electricity…like a stun gun.

I have epilepsy.

Would some very bad interaction between a stun gun and epilepsy be likely? And, knowing this, what are the implications of that on self-defense?

There’s at least one case from ten years ago involving a police officer who had a seizure after being accidentally hit with a taser.

The description by witnesses of the event involving our patient is most compatible with a generalized tonic-clonic seizure. The loss of consciousness, clonic movements, foaming at the mouth and postictal confusion experienced by our patient differentiate the episode from the usual transient incapacitation induced by tasers. The taser current that passed to his brain from the dart in the occiput probably provoked the seizure directly, with a mechanism akin to that of seizures induced by electroconvulsive therapy. In electroconvulsive therapy, an initial charge of 38-60 millicoulombs is used, according to therapeutic protocol in the United States.8 It is plausible that a copper dart penetrating the scalp and discharging 95 pulses of 100 microcoulombs each could trigger a generalized convulsion.

Given previous case reports of taser-induced cardiac arrhythmias, one could speculate that an initial induced cardiac arrhythmia and a secondary hypoxic seizure, or convulsive syncope, occurred in our case. Convulsive syncope is believed to result from reticular disinhibition in the brainstem resulting from hypoxia-induced cortical dysfunction.9 However, this mechanism seems unlikely in this case, especially given that the points of impact of the taser darts were over the head and upper back and not the heart.

Even less likely is the possibility that the convulsion was induced by a concussion resulting from the direct physical impact of the darts or impact of the patient’s head on the ground. Our patient’s prolonged period of unresponsiveness and subsequent postictal confusion is not typical of a concussive convulsion, which is usually characterized by immediate onset and a rapid recovery that takes place over a few minutes.10 On the other hand, we believe that his persistent symptoms after injury may be attributable in part to postconcussion syndrome, presumably secondary to mild traumatic brain injury caused by either the impact of the taser dart or the subsequent fall to the ground during the provoked seizure.

Until now, most reports of taser-related adverse events have understandably concentrated on cardiac complications associated with shots to the chest.2 Our report shows that a taser shot to the head may result in brain-specific complications. It also suggests that seizure should be added to the list of taser-related adverse events.

Foxes have long been pets:

Foxes were domesticated by humans in the Bronze Age

In the northeast of the Iberian Peninsula, between the third and second millennium BC, a widespread funeral practice consisted in burying humans with animals. Scientists have discovered that both foxes and dogs were domesticated, as their diet was similar to that of their owners.

The discovery of four foxes and a large number of dogs at the Can Roqueta (Barcelona) and Minferri (Lleida) sites stands out among the many examples of tombs in different parts of the north-eastern peninsula. These burials reveal a generalized funeral practice that proliferated in the Early to Middle Bronze Age: that of burying humans together with domestic animals.

Ryan didn’t impress me much with what was revealed - he was very measured. I suspect he did the show just because he thought it would be proper for him to do it.

Both Gabbard and Rubio seemed more engaged with discovery.

What Ryan and Rubio had in common though is the need to spin any take on genealogy into the American religion, that particular mythos of overcomers, raising yourself up by one’s bootstraps, etc.

I found it rather depressing to watch them as they worked to reprocess discoveries to fit their particular public persona.

In some ways their reactions are typical - we selectively remember the past.

In my YouTube wandering, I came across a docu about the NYC diamond trade, but I never watched it. I should go hunt for it sometime. It’s an entire subculture.

The diamond cartel is really unhappy about people who say they can manufacture diamonds from scratch. It’s still too expensive a process to be commercially viable, but I bet the diamond billionaires would probably buy the tech just to maintain their huge markups on pretty carbon crystals.

Ryan’s background if I recall is close to my father’s except inverted. I think you’re right. We do want to romanticize our ancestors in genealogy. I think that’s inevitable. I see so many people on the Facebook groups I’m a member of hoping they’re related to royalty or if not royalty getting really hung up about their DNA estimate. What interests me about it all is how all these people from completely different places and time periods are why I’m me.

But I think you’re right. We don’t want to deal with the dark sides of our ancestors. Funnily enough, a distant cousin found some contemporary information from the time he died for me that suggests my second great grandfather may have actually committed suicide rather than been murdered. I’m not sure because the article he found said his son (my Great Grandmother’s oldest brother) had died in a fall but I found a death record that had him dying of Consumption and that had caused second great grandfather to be depressed and was acting weirdly. We’ll never know what really happened I guess since this was 137 years ago.

for the sake of keeping our collective sanity, i think it’s worth remembering and saying out loud now and again:

these people do not argue from logic, for consistency, or towards finding truth or presenting proof

they create arguments that ‘win’ and so must be ‘right’ because they cannot be ‘wrong’

remembering this perspective is important, because responding with facts and reason dont and will never work against this mindset.

this is different than not engaging crackpots. one because like here, its mostly us talking about htem and not to them. and second because this is a tactic used by the cracked and non-cracked as well

A lot of the College Republicans at GMU were economics majors. And I have to say after meeting one of the few non-libertarians and conservatives that was enrolled in the Economics program at my alma mater, there’s definitely a reason why I take issue with people like Charlie Kirk and others that act like campuses “discriminate” against conservatives. The one student was telling me about how in her economics class, she was asked to answer a question about why the Obama stimulus was bad for the economy. Not if the stimulus was a good or a bad thing for the economy mind you but why it was bad. And then you’ve got universities like Liberty that actively forbid pro-choice, pro-LGBT group,s Democratic groups from operating on campus which technically is their right as a private university but if a private liberal arts university banned the Republicans and any conservative group from being able to form, we’d be hearing about it from Turning Points USA immediately. My conclusion is that college conservatives like their older counterparts can’t stand being told they’re wrong and get really pissy when someone does that wehtehr it’s another student or a faculty member.

Interesting article on what kind of evidence it would take to get a conviction for conspiring with Russia to influence the 2016 election. Hint: circumstantial evidence is sufficient if you have a strong enough case.

Most people who get indicted, let alone convicted, are indicted on circumstantial evidence. Direct evidence isn’t always available.

Doesn’t stop prosecutions from getting convictions.

Circumstantial evidence includes…. financial records and DNA evidence - the kind of thing that Law & Order and NCIS and all those procedural shows use all the time to lock up the bad guys.

Much of this goes back to church teachings that the man is the head of the household and of the marriage and that his wife must be subservient to him, etc.

I don’t believe these are proper teachings or even biblically correct (The Bible has many passages imploring men to treat their wives well and respect them) but that is where the power dynamic comes from.

Bob Dole treated his wife as an equal. Mitch McConnell seems to treat his wife reasonably, although maybe that’s ‘cause she’s got 10x the money he does. Which would also be the reason Betsy Devos’ invisible husband doesn’t get in her way. OOOHH— George Conway doesn’t mistreat Kellyanne, he’s extremely indulgent of her.

Gerald Ford… uh, doesn’t really qualify as “conservative”. Neither does Arnold Schwarzenegger, but he seemed to treat his wife reasonably well (until we found out about his extra child that she didn’t realize was his until the kid was a teenager and started to really look like him, that’s pretty goddam sleazy.)

Manafort is never ever going to see the light of day. He’s going to spend the rest of his life in prison. Trump can’t pardon Manafort on state charges. And there’s no double jeopardy involved here either. Manafort is subjected to state charges that are unique from the federal charges. He broke state tax laws.

This charging was inevitable.

But it also should be a reminder that there are prosecutors in NYC (the Manhattan DA Cy Vance) who failed to fully investigate, let alone charge Trump’s people - including Jared and Ivanka when they engaged in wrongdoing). That comes back to bite everyone in the worst way. Vance had a meeting with Trump moneyman Kasowitz and the charges pending disappeared.

NEWS: Patriots owner Robert Kraft has been named by police as a person involved in a recent prostitution, human trafficking sting operation in Jupiter, Florida.

this is a two or three county thing - martin, palm beach (you know, mar-a-grifto), and maybe st lucie. and it’s a huge story there

I just spent three days in Stuart, Florida - right next to Jupiter and everyone is talking about this. hundreds of indictments / arrests coming.

i am surprised it’s not a larger national story, yet - because of the human trafficking / slavery angle

i know people who know people who are about to get pinched. they are surprised, shocked(!), livid that their having visited prostitutes is about to get outed.

well dude, it aint so much the prostitute angle (bad enough for your spouse and family), it’s that you picked ones who were victims of actual human slavery and you likely knew it

re: #90 wheat-dogg, raker of forests, master of steam

In my YouTube wandering, I came across a docu about the NYC diamond trade, but I never watched it. I should go hunt for it sometime. It’s an entire subculture.

The diamond cartel is really unhappy about people who say they can manufacture diamonds from scratch. It’s still too expensive a process to be commercially viable, but I bet the diamond billionaires would probably buy the tech just to maintain their huge markups on pretty carbon crystals.

If its the one I remember, it is fascinating. It was filmed back in the day when de Beers was a cartel, controlling most of the diamonds sold throughout the world. The film had some scenes of how diamonds are traded and sold in NYC and it showed a couple of Hassidic jews making a trade of hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of diamonds, literally on a handshake. Of course, if the buyer didn’t make good within a certain period of time, they’d be ostracized from the trade forever.

Nah, Schfeter was pretty clear: Adam Schefter said on ESPN that Kraft isn’t the most famous person — there’s someone else whose name hasn’t surfaced yet who’s better known than Kraft.
“I’m also told that Robert Kraft is not the biggest name involved down there in South Florida,” Schefter said.

I’m familiar with sports reporters. He means someone whose name would probably be known by people outside of their field.

So, thinking about possible charges against Kraft and the others.

This might be solicitation - the easiest charges to make under the circumstances, but if these were women who were being forced into engaging in sexual acts against their will, there’s the possibility of higher charges since these women were not consenting to these acts.

It will be interesting to see the charging statements/indictments.

If it’s someone who’s been affiliated with the Miami Heat, I’d say Lebron James is more likely than Dwayne Wade if only because Lebron is internationally well known whereas Wade while a star and a future HoFer isn’t a household name.

What with prostitution (and availing oneself thereof) being illegal I can kind of see how you’d want to keep it off the books (not to mention from your spouse). If it’s pocket change that will be a lot easier.
You’d think a billionaire shouldn’t have too much trouble setting up a way pay larger sums discreetly, but that would require prior planning and not just going where your dangly bits point you on a whim every now and then.

I don’t suppose the women got a tenth of that (if anything) though.

This means that AIPAC has the grounds to disinvite Bibi from speaking at the annual confab.

A large percentage of the attendees at the 2016 AIPAC conference applauded Trump. I’m not particularly hopeful that the organization follows through and does the right thing this year.

re: #350 Barefoot Grin

A similar Chinese sex trafficking scheme operating in Maine and here in NH was just busted a month or so ago. The women were all promised jobs or entrance to universities by a Chinese couple, then had their passports taken and were confined to out-of-the-way homes.

Looks like a wall doesn’t stop that.

And isn’t human trafficking one of The Big Don’s reasons for a southern border?

So they charged kraft, yet he hasn’t been arrested. Getting really fucking sick and tired of these privileged dudes and the kid glove treatment.

Kraft probably hired Roy Black.

It still boggles my mind that men so rich try to get sex so cheaply.

I suspect that the thrill is not in the sex but instead in the risk of being caught.

Speaking as an old white woman with no clue about pricing for sex workers, wouldn’t those prices just about guarantee that the women are trafficking victims? Therefore, how could the clients claim they didn’t know?
“But Your Honor, how was I to know the computer I bought from the back of that van for $100 was stolen?”

Heh, local sports talk guys looked up the pricing at Orchids of Asia Day Spa. $59.99 for a half hour…and a super saving $79.99 for an hour.

Edit to add: No idea if it is fact.

If it didn’t take so long to raise a child, I doubt monogomy would have been invented.

There is a theory that monogamy was invented to spread women around more evenly to keep men without access to women from being a threat to those with many women. Also, a man with a wife and children has more to lose than a single guy, so early marriage and families has been encouraged by dictators and captains of industry to tamp down revolutionary thoughts in the masses.

re: #347 HappyWarrior

I think they’ve also looking at trafficking charges which would be a bit harder to prove than a simple solicitation/prostitution case.

Unless they can tie the money supplied for the trafficking back to the perp. Then there could be trouble. Maybe he wasn’t even participating in the festivities inside the establishment when he was there, he was just checking his investment.
